It’s that time of year again, apple pickin’ time!!
As much as Matt and I complain about the apple trees, we do love them at the same time! (Okay maybe not love…) I’m not sure if our “love” for the trees will ever be as great as my dad’s LOVE for them, but they are growing on us! This year we have one less tree because we cut down the Yellow Delicious last spring. That has helped with the number of apples we’ve had to pick!
My dad is the apple expert and we still have to ask him when they are ready to be picked each fall. I actually have to ask him what kind of trees they are each year too… wow! He stops by after work on numerous occasions in September and October to helps us pick them. Grandpa Dan really enjoys getting to pick apples with his girls!
It’s been fun watching Kenna help this year! We had a couple days this fall when it was so hot the black gnats were TERRIBLE. There were also a lot of bumble bees, so we had to take Kenna to Matt and Danielle’s because we were worried she would get bit!
In our family cookbook my Great-Grandma Rose Petersen has a recipe, Apple Betty. It has become the ONLY recipe we use to make apple crisp. This is my dad’s birthday cake request each year!
A couple years ago I started a tradition at school making Apple Betty with my class. This year I only had two students who didn’t like it. The rest of them LOVED it!
I always make one for the staff too, as well as bring in apples for weeks for everyone to enjoy. It is special for me to be able to pass on my Great-Grandmother’s recipe. She was an incredible person, having 13 children!!!
Danielle and Ella decided to make Apple Betty for our dessert one night. Ella was in charge of peeling the apples. What a good helper! Kenna was just interested in eating her apple. She now doesn’t want me to cut them she just wants it whole!
Sunday afternoon Matt and Kenna picked the last of the apples off the trees while I played frisbee with Lexi. It was another incredibly nice day for the end of October with temps in the high 60s!
I think daddy was relieved apple picking season is OVER! Now we need to get rid of the last batch of bad apples and it will officially be over!
We’ll end with my favorite picture of Kenna!
