Spring Break started early for us, as McKenna came down with the flu in the middle of the night Wednesday. I was home with her on Thursday and on Friday. Both days were spent in bed, watching movie after movie. You would think I would have been a little bit excited to start my vacation early, but that’s not the case when you are a teacher! Two days of sub plans meant time spent at school in the early hours Thursday morning and then again in the late hours Thursday night. It also was not fun watching my precious girl ask for a bowl on numerous occasions. Instead of cleaning the house, catching up my blog, Facebooking, or packing for our vacation, I spent the two days snuggling my sick baby, in between the umpteen million loads of laundry! :)
McKenna sick with the flu meant mommy had to miss one of her high school friend’s bachelorette party, a baby and wedding shower at work, and it took mommy’s problem of worrying to a new level. We of course had been around the Garvins which meant they were all now exposed. Lily’s FIRST BIRTHDAY and party was Sunday and we were all leaving for the Dells on Tuesday. Instantly I started worrying about if any of their family members would catch it, and we were praying it wouldn’t be Lily. Danielle was at work when I had to break the news to her over the phone. “Um… McKenna has the flu.” Her response was, “If Lily is sick on her first birthday I’m going to freak on someone!” We thank God for hearing and answering our prayers. I’m happy to report that no one else got sick. Alleluia!
Tuesday around 11:30 we were off to our second trip to the Dells. My parents, Kenna, and I rode in their van and the Garvins followed in their vehicle. (Matt decided to save his vacation days for summer.) About an hour into our trip we had to pull over on the side of the highway for my mom. Here we thought we were in the clear… and now one hour into vacation and my mom is sick! I started to worry again :) as I pictured all of us sick in our three bedroom condo.
We arrived to find out our room wasn’t ready yet. Trying to entertain two extremely excited kids in the lobby was not in the plans! My dad ended up taking them to the arcade where they “wasted” money!
As soon as we unpacked we changed into our suits and headed to the waterpark! My parents stayed back, as my mom was still not feeling the best.
I was a bit nervous, as the last time we were here McKenna absolutely HATED the water. This time it was a different story. All three girls LOVED the water!
The set up is perfect at Glacier Canyon- three bedrooms with two baths, kitchen with large table, living room, and small deck. This allows us to eat together (and not have to drag food place to place) and also play together. Each night when the kids went to bed we were able to play cards! This doesn’t happen much anymore because of the girl’s bedtimes!
Wednesday morning we took a shuttle (McKenna called it a school bus) to Wilderness on the Lake. This smaller waterpark is geared for little ones. We liked it so much we’re thinking about staying there the next time!
Garvin had to be Super Dad and also take McKenna since her daddy wasn’t there!
Matt, Danielle, and I snuck over to the outlet mall while the girls slept. We, or should I say the Garvins, did some serious damage at the Gap. I ended up getting talked into signing up for a credit card since Danielle already had one. We saved almost $100 by opening the card. :) Garvin took a picture of the total amount and sent it to Matt, hoping he would have a panic attack… haha!
After naps we went to the Wild West waterpark. Kenna was really excited to follow Ella through the four-story “playground” to get to the waterslides. She chickened out at the last minute and had to go down with Uncle and Lily!
Little Miss Lily loved the water. She wore some of Kenna’s old suits and looked sooo cute in them!
Garvin and I got to play husband and wife when we took our girls down the family slide. We had to wait quite awhile for our turn. McKenna kept asking if that was our boat (as the tubes were being lifted back up to the top).
Kenna wasn’t sure what to think as we plunged down the slide, as it was pitch black! If the line would have been shorter we would have gone again!
This yellow slide is the slide that put Kenna over the edge last time, completely freaking her out. Auntie took the girls up to it while I waited anxiously at the bottom for pictures. As Danielle sent McKenna off I told my mom to catch her at the bottom because she was going to go under (this is what happened last time). My mom didn’t react fast enough as McKenna flew down the slide ending with a splash big enough to soak my camera! We quickly scooped her up, dried off her face, and watched as Auntie and Ella came down. This slide should be called The Soaker, because you completely go under at the end! One time was enough for McKenna but Ella went down multiple times laughing hysterically!
Grandpa took the two big girls back to the Arcade while we showered up and got supper ready. McKenna returned in tears. As they were coming back to our room McKenna was walking with her head turned looking behind her. As she rotated her head back so she could see where she was going she ran right into the wall! That mean ol’ wall left McKenna with a fat, bloody lip! :(
Popcorn and a movie can cheer this girl up in no time!
Danielle, my mom, and I went back to the outlet mall for awhile after the girls got settled down with their movie. We were able to exchange a few things at Gap and shop a few other stores. Daddy would have been proud of me, as I only purchased a couple small things!
Thursday morning Matt, Ella, my mom, Kenna, and I drove back over to Cubby Cove while my dad, Danielle, and Lily stayed back to rest. Lily had been up screaming ALL NIGHT LONG, which also meant our entire place was up ALL NIGHT LONG! At the time we weren’t sure what was wrong with her, as this was completely out of the ordinary for her. (A few days later a couple teeth popped through.)
We were so proud of Ella for being able to do the lily pads all by herself!
My favorite part of Cubby Cove was that there was an area that was deep enough that you could swim. McKenna loved floating around in her Puddle Jumper! (Best purchase ever by the way!) McKenna also loved the big squirters. She had a blast squirting Ella!
Thursday was my 29th birthday so Garvin surprised me with a margarita! I relaxed in the hot tub and enjoyed my drink. The only thing I was missing was the SUN!
Happy Birthday Mommy!
By the time we got back to our room McKenna was so tired she didn’t want to eat. I decided just to put her down since she had recently had some snacks. McKenna asked if I would snuggle with her for a little bit so I agreed, since I was exhausted from getting little sleep! I ended up falling asleep with her in my wet swimming suit! I woke up long enough to realize I didn’t feel very good. I changed into my clothes and snuggled back in bed with Kenna. I woke up a couple times not feeling right. I figured I was just really tired and also hungry since I didn’t eat lunch. I also wondered if it was the drink that made my stomach hurt, since I drank it before lunch!
After naps we got our suits back on and headed to the Wild Waterdome. The Garvins had gone here the night before to try out the wave pool. There was also a nice area for small kids. I still wasn’t feeling that great but was trying to suck it up since it was our last day!
Spending three days at a waterpark means no make up and hair in a ponytail for three days!
As the day went on the worse I began to feel. Matt had promised Ella a snow cone, so I decided Kenna and I would get one as well and then we were going to have to go home!
The second we got home I went right to my bed while everyone started getting ready for my birthday supper at Marley’s. The girlies took a bubble bath in Grandpa and Grandma’s bathroom. They had been waiting all week to do this!
Unfortunately I had to stay home while the rest of them enjoyed a fun night at Marley’s. I was so weak and knew I was going to be getting sick. I was super sad since we saved our out to eat night for my birthday. I had been waiting all week for their amazing food and drinks!
My only request was that they take pictures while they were there. We had waited to take group/family shots because we knew we’d actually get ready for once since we were going out to eat!
It sounds like the girls were rather busy at the restaurant. A one year old, two year old, and five year old busy… no way!
While they were gone I got enough energy to take a shower. It’s a good thing I got my shower in because I didn’t end up showering again until Sunday, not kidding! Whatever I had, I had it REALLY bad. I won’t give you the details but I will tell you was blessed with having it both ends. I can say I was MISERABLE for at least 24 hours and then still felt very sick for another 48 hours. I kept thinking I was going to wake up and feel like a new person, but that wasn’t the case! And I still can’t believe I got it on my birthday! Couldn’t it have waited one day?! I didn’t get to open my presents, eat my cake, enjoy the decorations that Ella and Danielle put up, go out to eat, or play cards! I guess the only good thing about having it over break was that I didn’t have to do sub plans. I can’t imagine having to go to school and writing plans with the way I was feeling. I would have had to do it three days in a row for sure and that would have been horrible!
With me being sick our plans for Friday took a quick change. No longer were we going to one more waterpark and no longer were we stopping at the outlet mall so we could get our items on hold at Gymboree and so Kenna could put her pacis in a Build-A-Bear (she really lucked out!). We were packing up and going HOME!
With me still in bed, my mom came in and threw all my stuff into my suitcase and bag. I felt so bad that I couldn’t pack ONE THING! I was getting super nervous about the four hour ride home. I kept praying that I would make it home without getting sick and also that no one else would get sick.
It still amazes me that nobody else ended up getting what I had. Being in such tight quarters for four days, drinking from the same drinks, and sharing snowcones minutes before I got sick would be a for sure given that at least one other person would have gotten it, right?! Matt and I were both worried sick that McKenna would be unlucky for the fourth time this year. With the flu too fresh in her mind she would yell for a bowl (when laying in bed at night) the first few days home from vacation. Matt and I would rush into her room to find that she wasn’t sick. The little stinker had just found a new way to get her parent’s attention!
Overall, Spring Break was just what I needed, minus the flu of course! It was a week spent away from stress, enjoying time with the ones I love most. Thanks again to my incredibly, wonderful parents who are always willing to do whatever it takes to make their daughters and granddaughters happy! And an even bigger thanks to my mom. There is nothing better than having your mom take care of you when you are sick, even at 29! It was a great reminder that I may still be dumping McKenna’s puke bucket and waiting on her hand and foot, while also taking care of her 2 year old when she’s 29!
